- [ Rc-MP3 Set Priority ] Feb 20, 1999 It's still FREEWARE baby!

-
- Setting the encoder's priority is a little bit difficult to explain
- if you're not familiar with the whole process. Basically, when you
- decide to encode an MP3, you have a program running that is doing
- thousands of calculations per second. While you're doing this, you
- might still want to do other stuff with your computer at the same
- time - like read eMail, look at web pages, play solitaire, whatever.
- That means you would be running 2 or more programs at once - Encoding
- an MP3 and something else. Since Rc-MP3 allows you to set the
- encoder priority, you are basically saying "I want my computer to
- give this much time and attention to the encoding process, and give
- the rest to whatever else I am doing." The higher the encoders
- priority is, the lesser priority of whatever other process(es) you're
- doing.
-
- Here's an example: If you have the encoder priority on the Highest
- priority, and you try to launch another application, like Outlook
- Express, you might be sitting there for a while before Outlook opens
- up because the computer is devoting most - nearly 100% - of it's
- "thinking" time to how to encode the MP3. You'll still be able to do
- other stuff, it'll all just run a lot slower until you're done
- encoding.
-
- So what's the point? Why would you want to set the priority so high?
- The people that requested that I add that options says it lets them
- encode an MP3 in a lot less time than when it's at the normal
- priority. The default encoder priority is Lowest, which means you
- can encode an MP3 and run other applications without noticing much
- slowdown at all. You can see what the current encoder priority
- setting is by clicking on your Start button, Programs,
- RightClick-MP3, Set Priority, then click on Current. You can also
- click on one of the other options to change the priority.
-
- Also note that this Encoder Priority setting is only relevant if you
- are using BladeEnc, the default encoder.
